> The burekalou, often shortened to bure, were a prominent feature of every village in the Islands of Fiji. Many were remarkable for their extreme tall, pyramid form, and for the high, often terraced foundations on which they stood. The priests (known as bete) lived in these temples to minister to the resident spirit and function as intermediaries for any who might wish to consult them. The Phenomenon peculiar to Fiji was the construction of these bure by intricately weaving sinnet.
